In my graduate level history class the other day the topic of Iraq came up. One student made the argument that while, sure, Saddam Hussein was not a very nice man and the country had a few deficiencies that at least it enjoyed peace. Iraq, the student implied, was better off then than it is now -- calling into question the wisdom of U.S.-led intervention.

I've noticed that a number of other leftists have adopted this view -- that Iraq was better off under Saddam. Of course they more or less have to adopt this view, because to concede that despite the current killings and instability that Iraq is better off following the U.S. invasion would undermine their opposition to the war. True solidarity with the Iraqi people means supporting the current regime in Iraq and the U.S.-led forces attempting to establish security and stability. But, since the extreme left's true agenda is anti-Bush and anti-American and not the welfare of the Iraqi people, this is untenable.
