So last night I met Chresten for drinks. Guy didn't have a whole lot to say actually. Only interesting thing I can recall is that he said the Heritage Foundation's ranking of Denmark at the 8th most free-market country in the world was a mistake because they forgot to take into account some local tax that runs 20 percent. Maybe I just caught this guy on an off night, who knows?
:
More interestingly I did meet a Canadian who works for a Republican lobbying firm. That's got to be a pretty rare commodity. Her take on Canada is that it's basically akin to a sinking ship. She says her parents own a business in Canada making car parts or something and paid for her to go to high school and college in the U.S. because if you ever want to be successful you have to head south. She described Canadians as "caught between Europe and the U.S.," adding that they are "former Europeans and aspiring Americans."
:
She also said that anti-Americanism runs much higher in the Eastern provinces than in the West, and said that many Canadians assume Americans are jerks and then when they travel to the U.S. are surprised at how nice people are.
