Back from vay-kay which was spent in North Carolina's Outer Banks. Now, to make this relevant to the blog, everyone these days seems to be talking about immigration. Especially illegal immigration. And especially from Mexico. Now, this may come as a surprise, but North Carolina is home to the 7th largest population of foreign born Mexicans behind California, Texas, Illinois, Arizona, Colorado and Georgia. I, however, did not encounter a single one during my visit.

What I did find was a surprising number of guest workers from...Eastern Europe. Convenience stores. Food Lion. Even Burger King employed lots of young people from countries such as Poland and Belarus. Not quite sure what to make of it, but last time I was in the area -- four years ago -- I didn't meet a single one. Perhaps there is some geopolitical explanation. Or maybe kids from Eastern Europe just want to go to the beach in the U.S.
