I would be remiss not to mention today's bombings in Baghdad:
Insurgents killed more than 141 people Wednesday in at least 10 separate bombings and rocket attacks that made for one of Baghdad's deadliest days.
Targets included crowds of Iraqi civilians and at least three U.S. military convoys. The deadliest attack, in a northwest Baghdad neighborhood, exploded among crowds of Shiite Muslim day laborers gathered to look for work. Iraq's Interior Ministry spokesman, Col. Adnan Abdul-Rahman, said 90 people were killed....Suspicion fell on Abu Musab Zarqawi's al Qaeda in Iraq group, which is known for just such coordinated series of attacks. A statement by the group claiming responsibility for the attacks was carried by an Islamist Web site, according to the Reuters news agency.
Sick. Disgusting. Pointless. That's Al Qaeda's agenda in a nutshell: just blowing people up.
Another update: More on the enemy we're facing:
A U.S. Army commander asserted Tuesday that extremist fighters in northern Iraq committed atrocities against civilians, including beheadings, torture and the booby-trapping of a murdered child's body.
The accusations by Col. H.R. McMaster, commander of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, included some of the most graphic and specific charges by an American military officer during the ongoing battle for control of Tal Afar, a city about 50 miles from the Syrian border that has been an insurgent stronghold.
"The enemy here did just the most horrible things you can imagine -- in one case murdering a child, placing a booby trap within the child's body and waiting for the parent to come recover the body of their child and exploding it to kill the parents; beheadings and so forth," McMaster said in an interview from Tal Afar with reporters at the Pentagon.
In the words of Markos ZĂșniga, screw them.
