Page B3 of today's Washington Post has a picture of 4 girls from Stuart-Hobson Middle School in D.C. participating in a "Capitol Hill rally held yesterday to oppose legislation that would authorize drilling for oil and gas in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge." One of the girls is holding a sign promoting ArcticRefugeAction.org. The picture is entitled "Field Trip for the Environment" -- clearly implying that they are taking part as a school activity rather than on their own time.

Using kids as political pawns is simply outrageous. I wonder what D.C. public schools would think about allowing kids to participate in an anti-abortion rally? Or one dedicated to supporting the troops? Please. These kids are 10 and 11 year olds whose understanding of the issue is probably no deeper than "Polar bears good, oil bad." The teachers and administrators associated with this ought to be ashamed of themselves.
