Over at polipundit blogger DJ Drummond is throwing a party because of the demise of a Democrat-backed initiative in Ohio to reform the redistricting process. As DJ says:
Issue 4 would have removed redistricting power from elected officials, and put it instead into the hands of a five-member appointed commission. This is plainly contrary to the spirit of all existing constitutions, both Ohio’s and that of the United States. It also raisesthe obvious question of who and what would influence men who were not accountable for their decisions, but held the power to decide representation before the elections could even be scheduled.
Um, DJ, check out Iowa, which uses a commission to draw up congressional districts. Now check out a map of, say, North Carolina. Notice any difference?
:
As far as I can tell only extreme partisanship such as that practiced by DJ can explain opposition to redistricting reform.
:
Update: Check out Maryland too, what a mess. The 3rd and 7th districts in TN aren't pretty either.
