Well, the President's Advisory Panel on Tax Reform has issued its final report. A month ago I wrote the following:
This is the perfect opportunity to push for a flat tax -- and the best way to get his presidency back on track by re-energizing the base. Let the Miers nomination wither, dump the Medicare prescription drug benefit and cut spending and all will be forgiven. If Bush does none of the above he will be persona non grata with conservatives and it will be a long three years.
I should amend that to say push for a flatter tax rather than a pure flat tax, because that simply won't happen. But it's interesting to note that since I wrote this that Miers has been replaced by Alito and the White House is starting to make some noise about cutting spending. I'm not optimistic about Medicare but let's see if Bush seizes on tax reform. 3 out of 4 wouldn't be bad.
