While I regard most of what appears in Vanity Fair to be pretty worthless, it usually has one or two decent articles. This month's edition features one such piece entitled "The War Within the War" that describes the training of Iraqi troops by U.S. soldiers. It has a mostly encouraging tone but it still sounds like things could be going a lot better if some of the people higher up had more of a clue. Some of its themes are echoed in this column.

The concluding paragraph had a quote by a U.S. Army captain who (paraphrasing) said "We are winning. But it often seems we are winning despite ourselves."
