Patriotism

The Weekly Standard has a column in which author Paul Mirengoff questions the commitment by much of the left to fighting the war on terror. This reminded me of something else I've frequently wondered about: what's the left's commitment to America?

Seriously. While it's fashionable to pretend that we're all in this together, are we really? Now, by left, I don't mean simply Democrats. I mean the hard left. The kind that view Michael Moore and Cindy Sheehan as intellectual juggernauts. The kind that think Cynthia McKinney should be president. The kind that nodded in approval at those who volunteered to serve as human shields in Iraq prior to the outbreak of war. You know the type.

Of course, they often profess that they "support the troops" -- although their definition of support may differ somewhat from your own -- and loudly insist that they will not tolerate having their patriotism questioned.

The lady doth protest too much, methinks. While it's may be ungracious of me to say so, I do question their patriotism. And let's be clear, being unpatriotic isn't a crime. It doesn't mean a one-way ticket to Guantanamo. I just think we should call a spade a spade.

Really, it is all that unreasonable to think that they despise the U.S.? In my opinion, if you stop to consider their worldview, how could they not be unpatriotic? If I saw America through the same lens that they do I wouldn't be a big fan of the country either.

Think about it: if you're a Marxist or some other brand of communist, how could you have patriotic feelings towards the country that is widely perceived to be the world's chief bastion of capitalism? If you believe that the history of Blacks in the U.S. is one of uninterrupted misery and that the inability of many Blacks to escape from poverty is solely due to the endemic racism of Amerikkka, how could the country inspire warm fuzzies? If you think that the U.S. is a rogue state that roams the world wontonly killing third-world civilians in pursuit of oil and to support a broader corporate agenda, how can the country not make your stomach churn?

If the hard left really believes their own rhetoric, how can they possibly have any charitable feelings towards this country?
