Few things better symbolize my digust with politics at the moment than the debate over rising gas prices. Democrats have made it no secret that they plan to capitalize on the issue while Republican leaders have responded by effectively stating that they do not trust the free market.
It's appalling.
Rhetoric by Democrats indicates either an astounding economic illiteracy or breathtaking cynicism. This is the same group that has warned for years about the alleged threat posed by global warming and the need to ratify the Kyoto Treaty. One of the leading causes of greenhouse gases, of course, is automobiles. Indeed, Democrats have long argued in favor of things like higher fuel-efficiency standards. (a bandwagon that, in fairness, George W. Bush has also jumped on)
Now, if you want higher fuel efficiency standards, a simple way to achieve that is raising gasoline prices. Higher prices make more efficient vehicles increasingly attractive. Indeed, this is the case in Europe. So now that the marketplace is making this happen Democrats are professing outrage and promising to lower fuel prices. Talk about a disconnect.
And the Republicans? Well, they're running to the left for cover, somehow believing that it will salvage their dwindling political fortunes.
