"That the Soviet system has made great material progress in recent years is evident both from the statistics and from the general urban scene. . . . One sees it in the appearance of solid well-being of the people on the streets . . . and the general aspect of restaurants, theaters, and shops. . . . Partly, the Russian system succeeds because, in contrast with the Western industrial economies, it makes full use of its manpower."

John Kenneth Galbraith
John Kenneth Galbraith passed away this weekend. Although you will find out many facts about him in the stories offered up The New York Times and The Washington Post marking the occasion, you won't find this quote in either of them.
If Galbraith had spent his time condemning the Soviet system and praising capitalism -- i.e. spent his life being right instead of wrong -- I wonder if he'd be receiving this much attention upon his passing.
