Recently Congress passed the "Water Resources Development Act." The Senate version was budgeted at $14 billion. The House version had a price tag of $15 billion. When the bill emerged from a House-Senate conference to iron out the differences the final cost was placed at...$23 billion.
President Bush, to his credit, promptly vetoed it. This week, however, Congress overrode his veto by a margin of 361-54 in the House and 79-14 in the Senate.
Of the 68 members of Congress that voted against this pork-laden bill a grand total of two were Democrats -- Senators Feingold and McCaskill. Good for them. Shame on the rest.
