Agriculture policy

The New York Times lets Sen. Tom Harkin explain why we can't reform our farm subsidies:
“I don’t have the votes,” adding, “People love free money.”
Of course that money isn't free -- it comes from you and me. The article continues:
Many experts say the biggest step Congress could take would be to eliminate the direct payments in favor of a new revenue assurance program that would help farmers in times of need, but save money in boom years when crop yields are strong and prices high.
We shouldn't seek to "reform" the farm subsidies, we should scrap them.
