Via the Club for Growth I saw this story about Bush siding with San Francisco liberals against a farm bill being pushed by Speaker Pelosi. In a nutshell, Congress has made absolutely no attempt at reform and is even increasing the amount of farm subsidies -- that is money from you and me -- at a time of record high farm prices. Congressmen from urban districts are being bought off in exchange for increased food stamp expenditures. Thus we get this:
Pelosi threatened to blast Bushfor killing the food-stamp increase if he vetoes the bill, issuing a statement urging Bush to sign the legislation to "ensure that 38 million Americans - especially children - have improved access to basic nutrition."The notion that 38 million Americans lack access to "basic nutrition" is, of course, ludicrous. Meanwhile, the story concludes:
Democratic presidential contenders Sens. Barack Obama of Illinois and Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York supported the farm bill last year. Likely GOP nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona backed a failed effort at a radical overhaul and told Iowans last week that if he were president he would veto the bill, calling crop subsidies unnecessary. (emphasis mine)Interesting. You'd figure that Obama, being the self-proclaimed candidate of change, would be in favor of a reformed farm bill and against this kind of obvious flim-flam. Guess not. Meanwhile McCain had the guts to tell Iowans that he would veto such a bill.
