For those who missed it, Rep. William "Cold Cash" Jefferson lost his re-election bid in a special election held this past weekend. And the guy who did it? Check it out:
With the upset victory, Anh "Joseph" Cao, a eastern New Orleans attorney who fled war-ravaged Saigon as a child, becomes the first Vietnamese-American in Congress. He will represent a district that was specifically drawn to give African-Americans an electoral advantage and one in which two of every three voters are registered Democrats.
For those keeping score, Louisiana is now home to both the country's only Indian-American governor and Vietnamese-American Congressman. Damn racist Republicans -- kind of turns the much talked about "Southern strategy" on its head.
Will be interesting to see if Cao can hold on to the seat in 2010.
