Sweden and Denmark

Virtually no one on the left can resist comparisons to Denmark and Sweden, two small homogeneous (although increasingly less so) countries with sizable welfare states that they believe we should emulate. Sebastian Mallaby is the latest to heed their siren call:
Sweden and Denmark combine large public sectors with fast growth in GDP per capita.
Sweden GDP per capita: $37,500
Denmark GDP per capita: $37,200
US GDP per capita: $45,800

Why on earth would we want to be poorer?
