The Bin Ladens II

Finished reading The Bin Ladens today. A couple of other interesting nuggets from the book:
  • Osama's half-brother Salem died piloting a plane in Texas.
  • Osama had a Swiss bank account with several hundred thousand dollars in it that earned him about $2,500 in interest a month. That's noteworthy because I had a Muslim co-worker at my last job who didn't earn interest on his bank deposits because it is not compatible with the tenets of Islamic banking. But holier-than-thou Osama didn't mind.
The book also gives some criticism of the Bin Laden family for their renovations in Mecca and Medina (the family construction firm was given huge contracts by the Saudi royal family), which consisted in large part of tearing lots of historic buildings down and replacing them with new modern structures that look rather generic. Non-Muslims are prohibited from venturing into either one of these cities but perhaps you can judge based on this photograph:
