Republicans and spending

The other day I went over to Andrew Sullivan's blog to get his reaction to the stimulus package proposed by Obama. Sullivan, you will recall, wrote a book entitled The Conservative Soul that castigated Republicans for abandoning conservatism and then voted for both Kerry and Obama.

When confronted with the monstrosity that is the stimulus bill Sullivan pretty much ignored it, essentially saying that it was bad but that Republicans had no room to talk given the gargantuan budgets of past years.

It's a dodge. While true that a spendthrift GOP Congress passed some terrible legislation it is disingenuous to claim that no difference exists between the parties. For example, if you look at the Club for Growth's congressional scorecard that rates members of Congress on their support for free market measures, including cutting and limiting spending, we see for the most recent Congress that the top Democrat comes in ranked at #193. Ouch.

In the Senate it is much the same story.

Meanwhile, the Club for Growth today released their list of members of Congress that have sworn off pork for their district, and it features zero Democrats in the House and only two in the Senate.

There are real conservatives in Congress, there just aren't enough of them.
