Specter and Sullivan

Andrew Sullivan calls Arlen Specter -- the Democrat-turned-Republican-turned Democrat -- "my kind of Republican in many ways." I think that's probably a fairly accurate assessment. But it makes it really difficult to take Sullivan, author of The Conservative Soul, very seriously as an authentic voice for right-wing thought.

Sullivan also exhibits extreme naiveté in buying Specter's explanation of his vote on the stimulus bill as the deciding factor in his decision to switch parties. The stimulus had nothing to do with it, the polls did. But Sullivan is so eager to buy into the notion of the Republican party as an organization steeped in extremism and intolerance that he readily buys into it.

Update: What a joke -- turns out Specter proposed a rule banning mid-session party switches.
