Portugal decriminalized drugs in 2001. Here's a look at how it is working out:
Following decriminalization, Portugal had the lowest rate of lifetime marijuana use in people over 15 in the E.U.: 10%. The most comparable figure in America is in people over 12: 39.8%. Proportionally, more Americans have used cocaine than Portuguese have used marijuana.
Not only has personal liberty been expanded but Portugal has also been able to realize better public health outcomes. Time and time again we find that freedom is good not only for individuals but society at large.
