Destimulus

Short months after signing the stimulus package into law the Obama Administration and Congress now appear set to introduce a series of legislation that promise to de-stimulate the economy if enacted.

Leading the way is a health care bill introduced by Sen. Ted Kennedy, an interim version of which has been made available. Looking through it Keith Hennessey notes that it includes a mandate for employers to provide health insurance, with any company that does not do so subjected to a special tax. A cap and trade bill currently in Congress, meanwhile, is estimated to cost $12,000 per family.

Placing new burdens on the American economy even as job losses mount does not strike me as a terribly sensitive way to support a recovery.

Update: And so much for cap and trade helping to subsidize the rest of the welfare state.

Update: I should have also mentioned that the health care bill includes an individual mandate, as well as one for employers.
