The uninsured

Peter Robinson channeling Mark Steyn:
The 45 million uninsured Americans to whom Obama's plan will provide coverage? Steyn has examined the figures. One-fifth of the 45 million aren't citizens, and another one-fifth are already covered by Medicare.

Two-fifths are young. "[T]hey don't have health insurance," Steyn writes, "but they don't have life insurance or home insurance, either--they're 22 and immortal and life's a party."

The final one-fifth? With household incomes of over $75,000 a year, they're richer than most of the rest of us. You read that correctly. One-fifth of the uninsured have more money, not less, than most other Americans. "Since the last round of government 'reform' in the '90s," Steyn explains, "wealthy Americans have been fleeing insurance."

There is plenty of access to health insurance...even risk pools available in different states for people who don't qualify for coverage due to pre-existing conditions. There are problems with the system as a whole, but I'm not sure one could call it a crisis. I think they should regulate the drug companies and the insurers a bit better to take away some of the profit motive...this is in the national interest, I believe, and probably the best way to tackle the problem of higher costs.
