More Freddie and Fannie fun

Today's New York Times looks at appraisals:
But the reality is that many companies that write home loans these days do not have much incentive to worry about the accuracy of appraisals. That is because the companies do not keep the loans on their own books, instead selling them to [federal mortgage agencies] Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac.
In other words, these federally mandated entities are contributing to a distorted housing sector. What reason is there to think that the introduction of government organizations in the health care sector will produce more efficient outcomes?
