U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has called together an invitation-only meeting of high-ranking airline, airport and labor officials, along with some industry analysts and consumer group officials, to discuss the future of the aviation industry. It reminded me of this quote from Adam Smith:
People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices. When such people gather, is it more likely they will be looking at ways to improve the lot of the consumer or themselves? Whose interest is the government really looking after?
