What inflation?

Electronics aren't the only thing getting cheaper:

Now, if we could just have the same kind of cutthroat competition in health care and higher education found in some of the sectors featured here, we'd really be getting somewhere.

At least one of these statistics raise concerns for me. The domestic airfare comparison statistic. BTS does not yet have inflation adjusted data compiled for 2010, nor any quarter therein. The most recent press release concerns Q4 2009. At first blush, it looks as if costs between Q4 2000 and Q4 2009 fell $73 (in 1995 dollars) from $300 to $227. However, if you visit the main airfares page you'll see that BTS notes airfares data only reflects the base ticket price and fees and taxes imposed by an outside entity. The fares data does not reflect baggage, food, or other airline-imposed fees. Between 2000 and 2009, the airline radically altered its price structure rendering, in my opinion, the comparison presented by that chart highly questionable. What a passenger got for his $300 in 2000 is substantially different (read: more) than what she received in 2009.
