Tonight I watched a documentary called Objectified, which looks at the world of industrial design. While interesting throughout, I was particularly struck by the discussion regarding the effort to redesign a potato peeler. One designer said that his wife complained of arthritis while using the peeler which prompted an effort to redesign new one.
The process involved a team of people working through many different prototypes and using advanced technology tools just to get it right and make someone's life just a bit more comfortable, in turn reaping a reward. No centrally-planned economy could ever create this. The free market never ceases to amaze.
Update: Here's another amazing story of capitalism at work. (HT: Don Boudreaux)
