Quote of the day

[Newt] Gingrich, who would have made a marvelous Marxist, believes everything is related to everything else and only he understands how. Conservatism, in contrast, is both cause and effect of modesty about understanding society’s complexities, controlling its trajectory and improving upon its spontaneous order.
As with most of what Will writes, this is exactly right. True right-wingers understand that the answers to the problems faced by society are not found in the individual brilliance of politicians or bureaucrats, but the collective knowledge of the people. Gingrich's technophilic prescriptions for every problem under the sun is the exact opposite of the implicit humbleness that right-wing philosophy is founded upon.
