In the wake of the Live 8 concert and the ongoing G-8 summit there is a lot of talk about aid for Africa. The best take I have read so far is from a Kenyan economist who says "... for God's sake, please just stop [the aid]."

Shikwati: If they really want to fight poverty, they should completely halt development aid and give Africa the opportunity to ensure its own survival. Currently, Africa is like a child that immediately cries for its babysitter when something goes wrong. Africa should stand on its own two feet.
I don't believe that all aid for Africa is bad -- helping to stop the spread of disease is certainly commendable -- but I believe Shikwati is dead-on that most of it does more harm than good. Remember, the road that leads to hell is paved with good intentions.
