Can't say I feel too sorry for the Germans. In 2002 they had the opportunity to toss out Gerhard Schroeder but decided that his opposition to the Iraq War counted for more than, say, jobs. Real smart move Deutschland.

Update: Here's food for thought: After the end of the Cold War just about everyone considered East Germany to be lucky as it's transformation into an advanced industrialized country would be aided by by generous subsidies from West Germany. Further it would benefit from an already established constitution and rule of law. 15 years later this is a rather dubious proposition. In terms of both GDP growth and unemployment eastern Germany has been surpassed by many of its Eastern Bloc brethren.

The lesson? I'm not sure but I'm tempted to believe that it's further proof that hand-outs don't work.
