Via the liberalpolicyfailure blog I discovered a story on DC public schools that I found deeply disturbing.
:
Imagine yourself as a student at this school who was actually interested in learning. There is simply no way it would happen. How would you prepare yourself for college? How would you prepare yourself for any kind of future?
:
And where are the politicians while all this is happening? Well, the DC City Council just seems to be spinning its wheels trying to figure how to pay for a $1 billion school renovation plan. Problem is, they say they don't have the money and are looking at various tax increases.
:
Now, think about that for a second. Washington, DC apparently has enough money to pay for a $500 million+ baseball stadium, but no money for its schools. Unbelievable.
:
Meanwhile, even if DC did have hundreds of millions of extra dollars to be spent on its schools, what would that solve? Kids would get nicer classrooms sure, but how would that fix the rampant incompetence? The lack of discipline?
:
And what's the Democrats' solution to fixing the country's schools? Well, they're not exactly sure, but they know that it has nothing to do with vouchers. In fact, as far as I can tell their only position is supporting the demands of the teacher unions -- you know, the same unions that in large part responsible for the screwed up schools in the first place.
:
Further, when confronted by the failure of public schools -- especially in urban areas -- to produce Black students qualified to attend above average colleges liberals seek to paper over the problem via affirmative action. Sub-par SATs? Low GPA? No problem, just give them a few extra points for the color of their skin in the name of diversity. No one stops to ask why these students aren't qualified in the first place, because that might raise some disturbing implications.

Should anyone really be surprised when these kids, who are given poor preparation for college in elementary and high school and then given admittance to schools they often aren't qualified for, don't graduate at the same rates as their white counterparts?
:
Liberal policy failure indeed.
