I remember reading a joke once about the difference between Republicans and Democrats. Democrats, the joke went, are the kind of people that would propose building an elevator to Mars. Republicans, eager to demonstrate their greater commitment to fiscal sanity, would argue that it should actually be a ladder, and only go to the Moon. I don't know, something along those lines. Anyway, you get the point.

I was reminded of that joke -- which happens to me increasingly often it seems -- after reading this George Will column this morning.
