American Apparel

So it seems that American Apparel has opened a downtown location and, as DCist notes, "given the clientele over the weekend we suspect some sort of blast fax was sent out in the hipster community."

So what's so special about AA you ask? According to their website it's that they "don't outsource to local or developing-nation sweatshops." At least I guess that's what the attraction is. The actual clothing doesn't strike me as anything special. Just looks to me like some 70s retreads. Oh, wait, apparently that's intentional. Weird. So either the hipsters who shop there have horrible fashion taste or are economist nationalists in the Pat Buchanan mold. Maybe a little from column A and a little from column B. Either way I don't think you'll find me there.

By purchasing clothing made in the U.S. that means that fewer people in overseas sweatshops won't have jobs. Personally I can't stand for that. People in [insert third world hellhole here] probably need that gig a lot more than someone in L.A. So I'm going to buy as much sweatshop labor clothing as possible to make up the gap and I encourage you to do the same. Think about the kids.
