This would be the absolute biggest gift the Democrats could give the GOP right now. Watching Bush taking on his Democratic opponents with a line of "I do not regret for a second doing whatever it takes to protection the American people" would be an absolute dream for Karl Rove.
It's almost tragic -- between the Jack Abramoff scandal, bridges to nowhere in Alaska and general dissatisfaction with Congress you would think that Republicans would be facing the November elections with some kind of trepidation. But when your opponents constantly busy themselves finding new ways to carve their entrails out you just don't have to be that good. It's like the joke about how fast you have to be to escape from a hungry bear -- just faster than the guy next to you.
