So Hamas won in the Palestinian elections yesterday. I'm not that broken up about it. In fact, I've always believed that perhaps the best way to stop Islamic extremism is for people to live under such regimes.
What's the most pro-American country in the Middle East? Iran. The citizens of Iran are so disgusted with their government that it has made them realize that Islamic theocracy is not the best way forward. In sharp contrast to Palestine, and pretty much any other Arab state, Iranians mourned the attacks of Sept. 11. These are people who know all too well the face of Islamic extremism.
Probably number two is Afghanistan. I don't know much about the course politics in that country will take, but I can guarantee that the Taliban won't be voted into power anytime soon. Look at this news story from just last week:
In my opinion the best thing that could happen would be for the Brotherhood to win and give the people exactly what they want. I suspect that in time, after experiencing the reality of having the country run by Islamic theocrats, they would be thoroughly turned off to their message. The only possible problem I see is that once in power the Muslim Brotherhood would cancel all future elections. Provided that obstacle can be overcome, however, I'm all for their rise to power. Let's get it over with.
What's the best way to turn someone off to communism? Force them to live under it. What's the best way to turn someone off to Islamic fundamentalism? Have them voted into power.
Update: Very similar thoughts here.

More than 5,000 people chanting "Death to Pakistan!" marched through two Afghan border towns Wednesday to protest a suicide bombing they blame on the neighboring country. Those guys are on our side. The people who aren't on our side are those in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and elsewhere who see their governments as corrupt puppet states supported by the U.S. The alternative to their rule, they believe, are religious-inspired movements such as the Muslim Brotherhood. Indeed, in Egypt the Muslim Brotherhood is wildly popular and if the country were ever to have free and fair elections it would be swept into power.
The blast at a wrestling match on Monday killed 21 people, making it the deadliest suicide attack since U.S.-led forces ousted the Taliban in 2001. No one has claimed responsibility, and a purported spokesman for the Taliban rebels denied involvement.
"Death to Pakistan! Death to al-Qaida! Death to the Taliban!" the protesters shouted as they marched to the towering Friendship Gate that marks Waish's border crossing with Pakistan.
