Today there was an immigrant rally here in D.C. I couldn't attend but did see a few people coming back from it in the late afternoon. One was a group of 4 people with one guy wearing a Salvadoran soccer jersey and holding an American flag. Another was just a father with his son. The Washington Post has a panoramic picture of the event you can see here.
There is a sharp contrast between this image, that features plenty of U.S. flags, and other pictures -- many from California -- that have people waving Mexican flags. I wonder what explains the difference. Is it because organizers learned their lesson from the earlier protests? Is it because immigrants in D.C., who are overwhelmingly non-Mexican, have stronger U.S. loyalties?
Not sure, but it's good to see -- and good for their cause I suspect.
Update: Saw some other protesters at Chipotle. One was clutching a Mexican flag, one guy had a U.S. flag draped around himself and another carried a sign that said "We build for you, we clean for you, we fight for you."
