Watching the Discovery Times channel last night I learned something new about this episode. In a program entitled "The Battle for Baghdad" or something similar two U.S. soldiers who participated in the toppling of the statue were interviewed. They stated that the idea for putting up the U.S. flag was actually not theirs, but a member of the Iraqi throng that was crowded around. He repeatedly asked for a U.S. flag and so the soldiers came up with one. Then the U.S. commander ordered that the flag be put up briefly, to be replaced by an Iraqi one. The Iraqi flag, not surprisingly, was provided by the locals, who insisted that the traditional flag minus the Arabic lettering incorporated by Saddam, be used.
