Reading this article on farm subsidies one paragraph stood out:
The Senate bill raised $16 billion through an array of budget gimmicks and what many contend are dubious assumptions of revenue gains from tax loophole closings. Much of it went to pay for a big new crop disaster program that will mainly benefit drought-prone areas of the High Plains, backed by Sens. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., and Max Baucus, D-Mont. To broaden support, extra money was thrown in for a variety of other programs. If there are areas that are drought-prone, why are we encouraging people to farm there? The last sentence about throwing even more pork into the equation is just insult to injury.
