I realize that my passion for the free market and capitalism can seem a little strange. But when I look at all the great things that it has provided us I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't feel the same way. One great example is bus service between D.C. and New York City. For years the only way to get from the District to NYC was via Greyhound, with fares running north of $50. Then the Chinatown buses started up, with buses running between the Chinatown communities of NYC and DC. Geared towards immigrant Chinese, the fares were closer to $35, and during fare wars went even cheaper. The only trade-off was that they weren't very clean and had a tendency to smell. Now, however, there is a new entry -- Bolt Bus. Offering clean bathrooms and free wifi, the fares are also cheap if you plan ahead. I just found a roundtrip fare in mid-July for $8.50.
All thanks to competition and the free market.
