David Brooks has a superb column on why any bailout of the auto industry is a terrible idea. House Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner meanwhile has come out in opposition (although not as strongly as I would like) to any such legislation, possibly lending credence to the theory that Republicans needed some time out in the wilderness to rediscover their principles.
I understand that Obama would be hard pressed to veto a bailout giving that favors are owed to the UAW for their support of Dems, but really, couldn't the conversation just go something like this:
Detroit: "We're broke!"Obama: "Pick up a newspaper, we are too!"
A huge and expanding budget deficit can be a convenient tool to make some pretty unpopular, albeit necessary moves for Obama. That is if he wants to.
