The Next Mumbai...on U.S. Soil?

David Ignatius:
What would happen if roving gunmen infiltrated U.S. cities and started shooting? Most U.S. police departments aren't well prepared to deal with such "active shooters," as they're called. Police are trained to cordon off an area that's under attack and then call in a paramilitary SWAT team to root out the gunmen. But what if the attackers keep moving and shooting?
Depends where this occurs. If it happens in someplace like DC where only criminals and police have guns, then you better hope you are standing next to a cop or a thug. If this happens in Colorado Springs, then I imagine that the hunters would become the hunted pretty quick given how many people around there carry concealed weapons.

The larger point here is that the police can't be everywhere at once. We can't rely on them as the solution against terrorists. The real answer lies with the people, who can't afford to remain docile in the face of terrorism. Remember, the 9/11 hijackers anticipated almost everything except for what occurred on Flight 93 where the passengers rose up.

The best solution against terrorism is an armed and alert citizenry.
