On the bus coming back from the airport the other day I overheard a former Obama campaign staffer tell an Australian visitor that one of the benefits of the Obama presidency was that he wouldn't have to put a Canadian flag on his backpack anymore when traveling overseas.
How sad. My feelings towards my country have absolutely nothing to do with its leadership. Furthermore, the hostile feelings that being American overseas engenders (something I never experienced during travels to the UK, Netherlands, France and Italy during the Bush Administration) is more a feature than a bug. After all, anyone who starts to harangue you simply for the fact of being an American has instantly revealed themselves as a complete idiot not worthy of your time.
Now with the Obama Administration it will take a bit more discerning to figure that out.
