Sen. Harry Reid, the same guy who apparently labors under the illusion that income taxes are voluntary, recently offered up another whopper: "Social Security...is fully funded for the next 40 years." Never mind that this is contradicted by the Social Security Administration's very own literature.
Reid isn't alone, with Sen. Barbara Boxer insisting last week that "There is no deficit in Social Security," apparently oblivious to the fact that the program ran at least a $45 billion deficit last year and is projected to have a $600 billion deficit over the next decade.
It seems that policy options on Social Security are vastly expanded when one is no longer constrained by reality.
